Student of the Year Award

February 2010 Barry Kyokushin awarded one Senior student and one Junior student a shield and certificate in recognition of their efforts while training and in their dedication and help with the club. Senior student Peter Hilldrup, who won the Student of the year award in 2008 was presented the shield for his continued efforts in training and with the day to day running of the club finances. Peter has always said that he has seen huge changes to his health since joining our club and after recently achieving his 3rd Kyu Grade Peter is now gearing up for summer camp where he hopes to gain his 2nd Kyu Brown Belt. Junior student Natascha Sedgmond was awarded Junior Student of the year for her dedication to training and in the last 18 months Natascha has taken a keen intrest in Bo (6ft pole / Staff). She has sought extra training to achieve more and has performed soley in demonstrations in front of hundreds of people with professional skill and confidence.
Over the years Barry Kyokushin has seen many students who have achieved great things but Peter Hilldrup and Natascha Sedgmond have always strived to go that extra mile, to do more for themselves and their club.
Mother and Son shine at
British Championships

Mother and son Rachel Sim and Joseph Parfitt competed along with 4 other members of Barry Kyokushin Karate Club in this years International Kyokushin Karate Organisations British Championships. Joseph Parfitt, who was competeing for the first time in any tournament had 4 hard rounds and was unlucky not to collect 1st Place but both Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill (and mother Rachel) are very proud of Joesph achieving 2nd place Joseph aged 7years old is one of the youngest students at Barry Kyokushin karate club. He will certainly be one to look out for in future events.
Rachel fought 4 hard rounds and didn't even have time to rest after winning the semi finals when she was called back up again to fight for first place, Rachel really had to dig deep for the extra effort to secure her the 1st place in this event. This will be Rachels second British title in a row and next year Rachel is hoping to train to compete in the Knockdown category. Congratulations to you both.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL
OUTDOOR TRAINING
SESSION

Braving the elements Barry Kyokushin Karate Club held their annual outdoor training session on Saturday 24th April at the Brecon Beacons National Park where 11 Junior Students and 7 Senior Students were led up Pen y Fan by Assistant Instructor Senpai Phill. The weather started off quite nice, they all set off up the mountain and after 15 minutes of jogging the rain started, Senpai Phill then took the students through some stretching and kihon before pushing on.

As the rain became heavier it turned to hail, but our "hardcore" students ran on. Once they reached the half way point they were taken through more exercises and then it was the last push to get to the top. Once all the students made it to the point where they would climb to the summit of Corn Du it became evident that it would be too dangerous to continue to complete Corn Du. The wind was very, very cold and fierce and with frequent hail showers most people would have turned back, "not us", the club pushed on and made it to the top of Pen y Fan.

After photo's and a training session we started our descent, the Juniors were sent ahead and some of the seniors stayed to stand on the side of Corn Du for further training. After some basic kihon snow started falling and wind picked up so the seniors began their descent. It was a long day, some of our students had never been on this outdoor training session before and although they were very cold and wet from the day they all enjoyed it. Congratulations all, another great outdoor training session.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

On February 4th two of our students were awarded the Student of the Year award. For the Senior Student of the Year Award, Rebecca Scott 19, 9th Kyu was presented a shield and certificate from Senpai Phill Sedgmond and Sensei Richard Males, Rebecca has worked hard all year, has shown outstanding dedication and great spirit. Congratulations Rebecca, keep up the good work.
Our Juniors has quite a surprise too, as we recently have had donated to the club a shield for our Junior Students, and for the first year and following in his fathers footsteps (Peter Hilldrup, Student of the year 2007-2008) Jack Hilldrup, 9, 5th Kyu, was presented with the shield and certificate as Junior Student of the Year. Jack has worked hard for many years with the club, jack has never missed an opportunity to take part in any event the club or organisation has arranged and has shown great determination and dedication. Congratulations to you.
Sensei Richard and Senpai Phill are very proud of Rebecca and Jack for their efforts and wish them many congratulations. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to achieve anything in Kyokushin karate, that's what makes our style of Martial Art so hard. But, by focusing on your goals, every student can achieve great things.
